PHILIPSBURG--Some 27 living statues adorned the heart of Philipsburg in the vicinity of the Courthouse over the weekend, as part of the Caribbean Living Statues Festival 2015. Many locals and visitors came out to have a look at the open-air “art gallery” and to vote for the winning statue.

The St. Maarten Junior National Team (U-19) has made it to the final of the Leeward Islands Basketball Association Championship in Montserrat. In the semi-final St. Maarten faced Antigua and won 60-50. However the team reports, “we have sustained lots of injuries, which will make it difficult for us to attacked full force.” St. Maarten is 3-1 in the competition having beat St. Kitts 96-80 and Nevis 103-49. The team’s only loss was 99-79 to British Virgin Islands.

POINTE BLANCHE--Port of St. Maarten will be participating in the 46th edition of the Dutch “Vakantie Beurs” (Holiday Expo), which takes place at the Convention Centre in the Dutch city of Utrecht January 12-17. The island has been absent from the trade show for several years, resulting in a low brand awareness of St. Maarten in the Dutch market.

An 18-foot Christmas tree has been placed at Walter Plantz Square in Philipsburg. The beach and square will be lit-up for the holiday season. Every Friday, the square will host Happy Hour @ Walter to the tunes of DJ Em and restaurants will be open to cater to residents and visitors. Free candy and Christmas cookies will be given out to children. There will be a photo opportunity with “Walter loves Christmas.” Parking is available near the square.
